BHC worked alongside the City of Stanwood on an update to its entire municipal code. Our team developed a standard style guide template for all chapters to create consistency in language and formatting. We helped the City move to a different code publishing platform to allow easier navigation, and we combed through the code to remove confusing language and to streamline processes. As part of this effort, BHC helped the City create a Unified Development Code to incorporate zoning, land division, and environmental regulations into a new Title 18. We also updated the City’s Critical Areas codes to address best available science requirements, including those for establishing buffers for wetlands and wildlife riparian zones. Other major updates included housing provisions to incorporate middle housing requirements, streamlining code procedures, and updating street standards. BHC also helped create numerous graphics and visualizations to incorporate into the code and improve understanding.
