For nearly two decades, BHC essentially served as the planning department for the City of Orting, acting as an extension of City staff on both current and long-range projects. Our work included preparing the City’s first Shoreline Master Program and comprehensive plan, as well as subsequent updates to both the City’s development code and comprehensive plan. To assist the City with Architectural Design Review guidelines, BHC created an illustrated manual to ensure buildings and signs are consistent with the City’s adopted “Turn of the Century Western and Victorian” theme. BHC assisted with development review and permit approvals, which included planned development and binding site plan reviews, subdivisions, conditional uses, variances, design review, shoreline permits, critical area reviews, and SEPA environmental review. Through this work, we provided the City with responsive planning support that helped Orting manage growth while meeting its long-range design vision.

Additionally, BHC represented Orting on the Pierce CountyGrowth Management Coordinating Committee, contributing to updates of the CountywidePlanning Policies, preparation of buildable lands reports, and coordinationwith state and local agencies. We also successfully helped the City securegrant funding for much of the long-range planning work.
