BHC prepared a Downtown Vision Plan for the City of Orting, addressing the challenges of redeveloping and infilling its historic downtown. Existing development patterns, small parcel sizes, and a main street that doubles as a state highway required long-term coordination between the City and the State to ensure that future traffic solutions also enhanced pedestrian safety and amenities. Working in partnership with the City and the Orting Chamber of Commerce, a community visioning workshop identified strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. This community input guided technical analyses of parking, design considerations, and development feasibility. Based on these efforts, we generated Comprehensive Plan policies and development code amendments to increase the marketability of downtown Orting. The Downtown Vision Plan received honorable mention for the 2009 Washington APA Award for Rural and Small Town Planning.
